'Mechanical protein' robot will fold itself into any shape

1 day

Imagine a string that can assemble itself into just about anything wherever and whenever you need it ? a wrench to adjust your child?s bike seat or a hammer to pound a nail into the wall, for example. That future may be distant, but researchers have built a robot that already?hints at the possibility.

?The robot is just a continuous strip, it is a one-dimensional thing,? Neil Gershenfeld, director of the Center for Bits and Atoms at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told NBC News, speaking of the concept behind the device.

?It is a continuous strip that ? gets folded into the shapes you want it to make. This is a kind of robot that you can produce in a continuous process. You can produce it by the mile; it is not assembling a bunch of separate parts.?

The robot is called a milli-motein,?because it is a small "mechanical protein," inspired by the?organic molecules that naturally fold themselves into complex shapes.

On the software side, the robot has a math piece that turns code into shapes, the architecture that allows a one-dimensional robot make any 3-D shape. On the hardware side, it?s got a newly developed motor that?s similar in function to the giant electromagnets that lift scrap metal at the junkyard.?

The motors are called electropermanent because, after taking shape, they hold their shape without additional power. This makes them highly energy efficient and ideal building blocks. You can learn more about their function in this video:

In theory, the milli-motein ?can make any connected shape,? Gershenfeld told NBC News. However, for now, the robots are made by hand, meaning producing the joints in bulk is a time-consuming process. In addition, the team needs to make each joint stronger so they can support more than one module.

Immediate spinoffs for the technology include using the newly-developed motors in all-electric airplanes ?where they?ll move the control surfaces of the airplane but they are automatically safe because they keep their position without power,? Gershenfeld said.

The milli-motein technology could eventually make all robotics cheaper because, instead of making custom robots programmed for specific tasks, ?you can just produce this bulk material and use it for applications,? Gershenfeld said.

By the same token, the flexibility of the robots to be any shape desired means they can be reconfigured to do different jobs. ?That should, over time, have significant implications on the economics of automation.?

The work was funded by DARPA, the military?s futuristic research arm. Why?s the Pentagon interested in the technology? For one, it should lower the costs of robotics across the board,?Gershenfeld said.

?Because robots are so expensive, soldiers can risk themselves to protect the robot.? Ultimately, he said,??you don?t want a robot to cost much more than an improvised road explosive.?

NHL talks resume with owners, players meeting

NEW YORK (AP) ? NHL owners and players were meeting Tuesday afternoon at a Times Square hotel in an unusual session aimed at kick-starting stalled labor talks.

A group of about a half-dozen owners and 18 players got together without two key figures ? Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr. The hope is some candid, face-to-face talks will result in a breakthrough.

After more than five hours of talking, the sides broke for dinner and expected to talk again later Tuesday night.

If the hockey season is going to be saved, a deal needs to be struck soon.

Tuesday is the 80th day of the lockout. All games through Dec. 14 have already been wiped off the schedule, along with the outdoor Winter Classic on New Year's Day and All-Star Weekend that was slated for January in Columbus, Ohio.

New Observatories Will Warn Public about "Atmospheric River" Floods

An $11-million weather sensor network being installed in California will give officials more time to prepare for onslaughts of Pacific storms

SAN FRANCISCO?The heavy rainstorms that flooded parts of northern California this past week were caused by an "atmospheric river"?a long, narrow conveyor belt of rainstorms that stream in from the Pacific Ocean. Meteorologists were able to predict the storms five days in advance, thanks to a new network of weather sensors recently installed in the state. Although the network is only partially complete, when it is finished in 2014 it should allow forecasters to predict upcoming storms and floods with much greater precision, and could provide a model warning system for flooding on continental west coasts worldwide.

An atmospheric river flows about a 1.5 kilometers above the ocean surface and can extend thousands of miles out to sea, carrying as much water as 15 Mississippi Rivers. It strikes a coast as a series of storms that arrive for days or weeks on end. Each storm can dump centimeters of rain or meters of snow. Meteorologists have had some difficulty predicting the amounts of precipitation, and therefore possible flooding. Satellite radars can track airborne water vapor well over the ocean but not so well over land, according to Martin Ralph, a research meteorologist with the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colo., speaking at the annual American Geophysical Union conference here. Satellites also do not give a good assessment of winds within the corridor of water vapor, which affects how quickly they move rain inland.

Furthermore, the amount of flooding is strongly influenced by how wet or dry a region's soil is before and during the storms, which can only be accurately measured by sensors embedded in the ground. Knowing how much of the precipitation will fall as rain or snow is also important, because rain causes more immediate flooding whereas snow may cause delayed flooding.

The new warning system will provide all that information and more. Snow radars are being deployed in 10 major watersheds. Soil moisture sensors are being installed at 43 sites across California, which will be key to anticipating whether an incoming storm will produce heavy runoff, according to Michael Dettinger, a research hydrologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif., who was also speaking at the meeting. (Dettinger is co-author of a detailed article about atmospheric rivers in the January issue of Scientific American). Some of the snow radars and about three quarters of the soil sensors are already in place.

The centerpiece of the system will be four unique "atmospheric river observatories" located about 400 kilometers from one another. The units, about the size of a dump truck, look upward and show precise wind speed and direction at several altitudes, the elevation at which precipitation is rain or snow, and the total amount of water vapor above the site. They also indicate standard weather data such as temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure. The first observatory is being installed right now in Bodega Bay. The others will be set up in Eureka, Point Sur and Goleta.

The partially completed system already proved its worth two weeks ago. When satellite imagery showed moisture accumulating over the central Pacific researchers drove a mobile observatory into northern California and began compiling data from it with the other sensors that were already operating. Forecasters were able to predict five days in advance that an atmospheric river would begin pummeling the state. True to the forecast, storms started hitting the coast on November 28 and lasted five days, dumping up to 38 centimeters of rain, causing flooding and mud slides. Forecasters used the information to warn residents which rivers might flood when, and the state's Department of Water Resources used it to help decide whether to try to mitigate flooding by opening or closing dams and other structures along California's rivers.

The Times UK offers digital newspaper subscriptions with subsidized Nexus 7

As The Daily closes, The Times UK offers digital subscription with subsidized Google Nexus 7

While News Corporation's big tablet newspaper experiment, The Daily, may have ended with a whimper, it's not stopping the global media company trying new strategies to pick up more (paying) digital readers. The Times, one of the only UK national papers to keep its content firmly behind a paywall, has decided to offer a discounted Google Nexus 7 tablet alongside its digital subscriptions. Knocking £149 from the original £199 price of the 32GB Nexus 7, the device will arrive accompanied by an 18-month subscription with access to the full site and its mobile apps, costing £18 per month, discounted to just shy of £300 in total if you're willing to pay it all upfront. However, it's not the first time we've seen a news organization fold in a gadget incentive for new subscribers -- Barnes and Noble offered discounted Nooks alongside one-year subscriptions to The New York Times at the start of the year. UK readers can check out the deal at the source below.

The Minnesota Department of Commerce reminds travelers to ...

91.1 million Americans plan to travel this holiday season.? Those?who plan to travel via plane will be presented with the option to buy travel insurance upon the purchase of their airfare.? Many consumers do not know whether travel insurance fits their budget or their travel needs. The Minnesota Department of Commerce urges travelers to understand what travel insurance is, what it actually covers, and what conditions to watch out for.

?The holiday season creates lasting memories and for most families, travel is a part of the experience,? said Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman.? ?When planning your holiday travel, understand the travel insurance options available and make sure they fit your specific needs to ensure you spend more time enjoying your holiday and less time worrying about the possible issues that could arise.?

?

What Is Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance can protect against the loss of non-refundable travel costs, such as airfare, hotel and tour expenses. Other types of travel insurance offer limited protection against losses due to medical emergencies, damage to personal property, and even a death which could occur away from home while on vacation.

A typical travel insurance policy will cover?trip cancelation, travel delay, and trip interruption insurance.??Often, it will include?limited?medical, medical evacuation, and accidental death insurance.??Finally, most travel insurance plans will include?lost baggage.

Keep in mind, there is no guarantee your policy will include each of these items. Consumers will need to review each policy?s specific terms and conditions to determine its effectiveness. For example, purchasing ?trip cancelation? insurance does not necessarily mean you can cancel your trip without consequence.?

?

Should You Buy It?

The decision to purchase travel insurance relies on many factors.? Here are some things to consider before you make up your mind:

?

  • Travel insurance policies are not all the same.? If you buy travel insurance, be sure to review the policy, especially the list of covered reasons and exclusions for canceling your trip. For example, a travel insurance policy may not reimburse you if you decide not to make a trip because a conference was canceled.

?

  • Before purchasing a travel insurance policy, ask about pre-existing conditions and age limits.? Some policies cover pre-existing conditions if you buy the coverage within a week or two of booking your trip. Others will not pay for pre-existing conditions or charge a higher premium to cover them. Some insurers charge more for older travelers.

?

  • Cruise and tour operators may offer Cancellation Waivers.?Keep in mind that waivers are not insurance policies and are not regulated. Read all of the restrictions before you buy a Cancellation Waiver.

?

  • Review all of the policies you have now prior to purchasing travel insurance.?If you have life, health or homeowners insurance, you may not need to buy certain types of travel insurance. Read your policy and speak with your insurance company or agent to learn what personal property and medical coverage you have while you?re traveling. Also, ask what insurance benefits you may have if you use a credit card to pay for the trip.

?

  • No policy can guarantee your safety?when you are traveling, but knowing you are covered for medical emergencies or the loss of personal property may help you relax and enjoy your vacation.

?

  • Check the refund policies on prepaid expenses before buying travel insurance.?Some will refund your money if you cancel months in advance, but few will offer any refund if you cancel at the last minute.

?

  • Ask around.?If you are working with a travel agent you trust, ask about his or her experiences with travel insurance companies. Have their customers filed claims? Were those claims paid? If you are planning an adventurous vacation (i.e. skydiving, scuba diving), ask if the insurance will cover those activities.

?

Go to the?Minnesota Department of Commerce?website?for more information on travel insurance and the different types of plans that are offered.? If you are having a problem with a company that sold you a travel insurance policy, contact the Department?s consumer response team by calling:?651-296-2488?or?1-800-657-3602.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Louisiana state police are launching a criminal investigation of a company after finding about 6 million pounds of explosive material that they say was stored illegally.

State police superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson said Sunday that boxes and small barrels of the M6 artillery propellant were found both outdoors and crammed into unauthorized buildings leased by Explo Systems Inc. at Camp Minden, the former Louisiana Army Ammunitions Plant.

Police are evacuating the town of Doyline, about 270 miles northwest of New Orleans. About half the town's 800 residents left Friday.

M6 propellant is used in howitzers and other artillery. Police began investigating the company after an explosion at the site Oct. 15.
