Jihadists from Syria rival al Qaeda threat, say UK police

By Michael Holden

LONDON (Reuters) - Islamist militants are less capable of organising plots on the scale of 9/11 but small groups of jihadists returning from Syria pose a grave threat to British security, the country's two most senior counter-terrorism officers said on Thursday.

Every year, Britain's security services are faced with at least one plan to carry out an attack on the level of the July 7, 2005 suicide bombings on London, known as the 7/7 attacks, which killed 52 commuters, the officers said.

While the al Qaeda leadership in Pakistan and Afghanistan can no longer coordinate such attacks on the level it once could, the threat is now more complex with more autonomous militants just as dangerous.

"There is no doubt the big sophisticated 9/11 type plot, 7/7 type plots, are much harder to organise," said Stuart Osborne, Britain's Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism.

"They did need a lot of overseas direction and I think it would be fair to say that some of the al Qaeda leadership have sort of said that's good if you can do it, but if not, any attack, whatever you can, at whatever size is useful."

He said small groups of Islamist militants, many who had travelled for training and to fight in places such as Syria, Yemen and Somalia, were forming at short notice and without the broader command and control structures that previously existed.

"The innovation that they are now creating has actually potentially made it just as dangerous, if not more so," he Osborne told reporters.

Britain's national threat level from international terrorism is currently assessed at "substantial" - the third-highest level of five, meaning an attack is a strong possibility.

That is one notch lower than it has been for most of the years following the 7/7 bombings, and there have been no deadly attacks by militants on the British mainland since then.

THREAT REMAINS

The government and security services say a serious threat remains, and last month three British Islamists were found guilty of plotting a campaign of bombings to create what one described as "another 9/11".

"The threat has not gone away but is changing in its nature. We can't be and we absolutely are not complacent in the face of those challenges," said Cressida Dick, head of specialist operations for London police and the most senior counter-terrorism officer in the country.

Foreign Secretary William Hague warned last month the ongoing conflict in Syria would breed a new generation of battle-hardened militants who would pose a risk to Britain and other European countries.

"The opportunities to exploit vulnerabilities in Syria and similar places are now going to be looked at. They will go where ever they feel they can get their training at the easiest possible opportunity," said Osborne.

"Some who have been trained actually are becoming quite self-motivated, they're beginning to plan in small groups which are hard to detect."

While Osborne and Dick declined to say how many Britons had gone to Syria, saying it was a small number, Western security sources say dozens of impressionable young men have joined the conflict there from Western European countries.

Worker admits cutting 10 babies at abortion clinic

(AP) ? A medical assistant told a jury Tuesday that she snipped the spines of at least 10 babies during unorthodox abortions at a West Philadelphia clinic, at the direction of the clinic's owner.

And she said Dr. Kermit Gosnell and another employee did the same to terminate pregnancies.

Adrienne Moton's testimony came in the capital murder trial of Gosnell, who owned the clinic and is on trial in the deaths of a patient and seven babies. Prosecutors accuse him of killing late-term, viable babies after they were delivered alive, in violation of state abortion laws.

Gosnell's lawyer disputes that any babies were born alive and challenges the gestational age of the aborted fetuses.

Moton, the first employee to testify, sobbed as she recalled taking a cellphone photograph of one baby left in her work area in 2008. She thought he could have survived, given his size and pinkish color. She had measured him at nearly 30 weeks.

Gosnell later joked that the baby was so big he could have walked to the bus stop, she said.

Jurors saw Moton's photograph of the boy called "Baby A" on a large screen in the courtroom, which took on a bizarre look Tuesday as witnesses testified near a hospital bed with stirrups and other aging obstetric equipment. Denied the chance to bring jurors to the shuttered inner-city clinic, prosecutors are instead recreating a patient room in court.

The mother of "Baby A" testified Tuesday afternoon, describing a painful three-day abortion process that started at Gosnell's clinic in Delaware. She was 17, had an infant daughter and was told by Gosnell she was 24 weeks pregnant ? the legal limit in Pennsylvania, but not in neighboring Delaware, where abortions are banned after 20 weeks.

The Chester woman said she given abortion drugs in Delaware and sent home the first two days, then was directed to the West Philadelphia clinic the third day. She was in severe pain by then, pain that only worsened the following week, she said.

Her aunt had taken her to the clinic and paid the $1,300 fee, and they had not told her mother.

"I never felt pain like that, ever," the woman said. "I couldn't talk to anybody and tell anybody."

But the teen ended up being hospitalized for two weeks with a large abscess and a blood clot near her heart. Prosecutors say she is one of countless patients injured during botched abortions or unsanitary conditions.

One patient, a 41-year-old refugee, died after an overdose of drugs allegedly given to her during a 2009 abortion.

Moton, 35, had lived with Gosnell's family during high school because of problems at home, then went to work for him years later. She earned about $10 an hour ? off the books ? to administer drugs, perform ultrasounds, help with abortions and dispose of fetal remains from 2005 to 2008.

She once had to kill a baby delivered in a toilet, cutting its neck with scissors, she said. Asked if she knew that was wrong, she said, "At first I didn't."

Abortions are typically performed in utero.

Moton has pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, which carries a 20- to 40-year term, as well as conspiracy and other charges. She has been in prison since early 2011, when Philadelphia prosecutors arrested Gosnell, his third wife, Pearl, and eight other employees. Most of them have pleaded guilty and are expected to testify.

Defense lawyer Jack McMahon told jurors in opening statements Monday that Gosnell, now 72, returned to the impoverished neighborhood after medical school when he could have struck it rich in the suburbs. He called the prosecution of his client, who is black, "a lynching."

But prosecutors believe Gosnell made plenty of money over a 30-year career using cheap, untrained staff, outdated medicines and barbaric techniques to perform abortions on desperate, low-income women.

And they say he made even more on the side running a "pill mill," where addicts and drug dealers could get prescriptions for potent painkillers. Authorities found $250,000 in cash under a mattress when they searched his home in 2010.

Sony Ericsson Windows Phone prototype hits eBay, reminds us sliders existed

Sony Ericsson Windows Phone prototype slides onto eBay, wants us to call her Julie

eBay is as close as it comes to a genuine Aladdin's cave, and we've seen plenty of ancient rarities, prototypes, sci-fi weaponry, and the odd killer robot go under its gavel. One of the latest artifacts of interest comes from eBay's Netherlands site, which is hosting an auction for a Windows Phone prototype slider known to her friends as Julie (or Jolie, depending on where you look in the listing) from the now defunct Sony Ericsson partnership. The phone that never was from the company that is no longer is allegedly one of only seven units made, and is touted as having an 8-megapixel shooter and 16 gigs of storage. Some digging through the XDA Developers' forum suggests the handset's old Windows Phone 7 ROM is basically non-functional, so don't expect to plug in your SIM and stroll out the door with a useable device. If that doesn't put you off, however, there's no exorbitant entry price, and bids remain sensible, for now. Head to the listing below for more pictures and to get in on the action, but bear in mind the only shipping options are for Europe. Nothing a PM with an outrageous offer won't rectify, surely.

Home Improvement || Safe & Green Cleaning Alternatives ? Tampa ...

These days more and more consumers are going green ? checking labels, being extra careful about what comes into their homes. And they are increasingly discovering environmentally friendly ?secrets? that homemakers and handymen have been using for centuries.? Last week, we touched on air-purifying plants, so let?s look at some green home cleaning alternatives today!

Savvy woodworkers have been using linseed oil for years because they appreciate the clean shine and quality texture the oil offers. A completely pure and natural product, linseed oil penetrates well and hardens to an even, protective sheen. Plus, most linseed oil goes on clear, preserving the unique color and grain of the wood. You can buy high-grade polymer oils that are thick and durable or lighter versions that offer a clearer, cleaner finish that seeps easily into the wood rather than sinking deep. Because all finish is a matter of preference, we recommend getting small quantities of several varieties and trying it out on sample of scrap wood first.

Used by vintners for millennia to keep from wasting substandard grapes, and used by our grandparents before the advent of the ?cleaner aisle? at the grocery store, vinegar remains a terrific, safe and natural all-purpose cleaning product. Mixed with baking soda or on its own, vinegar can be used in kitchens and baths to cleanse counter tops, deodorize and clean sinks and drains, and clean out your garbage disposal. You can also mix it with a baking soda and water solution to clean tile and laminate floors. Initially, the smell takes a little getting used to, because most of us are accustomed to those over-odorized chemical cleaners, but once you do, you will hardly notice the smell ? you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oils if you just can?t stand the vinegar smell!

Commonly paired with vinegar, this old school cleaning champion also works great on its own. Baking soda is not naturally occurring, but it is made from safe and non-toxic ingredients, primarily, soda ash. Used for years to neutralize odors in the freezer, baking soda is also great for neutralizing acid-based odors in water and even in the air. Sprinkle some baking soda on a damp cloth and, presto, you have a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser for kitchen counter, sinks, bathtubs, ovens and fiberglass ? and you won?t need those old yellow rubber gloves either! Plus, adding baking soda to laundry helps to neutralize odors (including sweat) and remove stains. Great for athletes or folks that really put the ?work? in a workday.

If you?re not ready for the do-it-yourself cleaners, but still want to decrease your environmental impact, Simply Green Naturals is a great middle ground.? Simple Green Naturals are 100% naturally derived using ingredients such as chicory, coconut, corn, palm, salt, sugar and water. The entire product line is non-toxic, biodegradable and made exclusively with essential oils and plant extracts.

What types of cleaners do you use in your home? Do you have any great recipes? We?d love to hear how you?ve improved your home with green cleaning in the comments below!
