FX traders seek coaching in battle for dominance

LONDON (Reuters) - In the take-no-prisoners world of foreign exchange dealing, asking traders to look inside themselves and confront their inner demons may seem a forlorn endeavor.

Yet some banks are turning to performance coaches to give their traders an edge in the battle to make money in the $4.5 trillion dollar a day FX market.

This soft skills approach contrasts with the popular stereotype of FX traders hurling prices -- and abuse -- at each other across the dealing room floor.

But while some dismiss techniques to develop a "clear-headed space" in which to trade as touchy-feely gimmickry, many are keen to embrace any tactic to outwit other market participants, whether human or machine.

"I talk about performance enhancement rather than psychology. It makes it a bit more approachable for guys who have still got a bit too much testosterone and ego," said trader performance coach Steve Ward.

With trading margins squeezed and bank cutting jobs, former physical education teacher and sports performance coach Ward had expected business to dry up.

In fact, the last year has been one of his busiest ever.

Trained in techniques including stress management and performance psychology, Ward also employs strategies underpinned by cutting-edge neuroscience research. Some exercises are focused on meditation to help develop attention and awareness.

Many financial market traders might baulk at such ideas and Ward acknowledged that in the male-dominated environment of some dealing rooms stigma may be attached to talking to a coach.

Steve Goldstein, who worked as a FX rates and fixed income trader for 25 years at institutions including Credit Suisse and Commerzbank before becoming a coach, agreed.

"People still use the term shrink. There are a lot of games in trading rooms that people play amongst themselves and look for signs of weakness," he said.

Both Goldstein and Ward said many of their clients were successful traders with 10 to 15 years experience who had lost their way and needed to regain self-confidence.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT TRADER?

Most traders and coaches agreed the most important attribute for making money in financial markets is self-confidence. Along with discipline and a clear process, it can help traders run profitable bets and cut quickly out of losses.

Without it traders may start second-guessing decisions, doubting their instincts and over-reaching for trades, said Graham Davidson, director of FX trading at National Australia Bank. He had a period of coaching around six months ago after slipping into bad habits that led to a 12- to 18-month "rough patch".

"We talked about all kinds of stuff. It was mostly trading-centric but equally you have to be able to look inside yourself and figure out what motivates you," Davidson said.

"If you understand your subconscious and what the drivers of your behavior are you can become a better trader."

A trader's motivation could be to provide for his family, achieve status or protect his position within the hierarchy of a dealing desk. It may just be the satisfaction of being right.

Goldstein uses a questionnaire with new clients, including questions such as 'If you could stand back and watch yourself trading - what advice do you think you would give yourself?'

He described the questionnaire, filled in during a 2-1/2 hour introductory session, as a debrief on all aspects of trading -- the psychology behind it, a trader's personal demons, strengths and weaknesses, and their edge.

Heads of trading at four investment banks told Reuters they were either using coaches themselves or had heard of increasing demand. Steve Ward said he estimated the number of dedicated trading coaches had doubled since 2006.

"These guys are in demand," said Hugh Killen, global head of FX at Westpac in Sydney.

Even banks unwilling to use an external coach increasingly recognize the benefit of supporting new recruits.

"It's very 1980s to drop them in the deep end and tell them to start quoting customers on day one. I have always taken an active role in training grads from the moment they set foot on the desk," said Mark Johnson, global head of FX cash trading at HSBC.

"Psychology is a huge factor in trading. If you address traders' individual needs then those traders will have a higher performance, but I doubt that any external coach could quickly recognize these frailties without an awful lot of background from us."

TOUGH TIMES, NEW TACTICS

A new pressure on traders -- and a reason some cite for the increased use of coaches -- comes from the growth of hyper-fast electronic trading.

In its latest survey, the Bank for International Settlements said spot algorithmic trading -- in which a computer determines how orders are placed -- rose to 45 percent of trade on the EBS platform in 2010 from 2 percent in 2004.

More electronic trading means fewer traders, while high-frequency algorithms can identify money-making opportunities and execute trades faster than a human can spot the prices.

"A lot of traders are struggling to compete against the boxes," said John Coates, a Cambridge University neuroscientist and former trader with Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank.

But, in the battle between man and machines, there are signs high-frequency trading is facing a backlash as banks and regulators focus on the human touch.

"Our ability to generate gut feelings makes our body the most sophisticated black box on the market. I have heard of pretty big players pulling the plug on their boxes and putting money back into humans," Coates said.

But it may be some time before traders' psychological well-being is put on a par with their technical know-how.

Many traders remain hostile to the idea of discussing their personal demons with a coach. A trader who admits needing help and wants to talk about his mental state risks mockery.

This could be more true in London than New York, given the UK's traditional antipathy towards the idea of therapy.

As one London-based FX trader said when asked if he had ever used a trading coach: "Nah, are you kidding? It just sounds all namby pamby and American."

Frat house alcohol enema case worries experts

Before an unruly Tennessee party ended with a student hospitalized for a dangerously high blood alcohol level, most people had probably never heard of alcohol enemas.

Thanks to the drunken exploits of a fraternity at the University of Tennessee, the bizarre way of getting drunk is giving parents, administrators and health care workers a new fear.

When Alexander "Xander" Broughton, 20, was delivered to the hospital after midnight on Sept. 22, his blood alcohol level was measured at 0.448 percent ? nearly six times the intoxication that defines drunken driving in the state. Injuries to his rectum led hospital officials to fear he had been sodomized.

Police documents show that when an officer interviewed a fellow fraternity member about what happened, the student said the injuries had been caused by an alcohol enema.

"It is believed that members of the fraternity were utilizing rubber tubing inserted into their rectums as a conduit for alcohol," according to a police report.

While Broughton told police he remembered participating in a drinking game with fellow members of the Pi Kappa Alpha chapter, he denied having an alcohol enema. Police concluded otherwise from evidence they found at the frat house, including boxes of Franzia Sunset Blush wine.

"He also had no recollection of losing control of his bowels and defecating on himself," according to a university police report that includes photos of the mess left behind in the fraternity house after the party.

Broughton did not respond to a cellphone message seeking comment on Friday.

The university responded with swift investigation and a decision Friday to shutter the fraternity until at least 2015. The national Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity organization also accepted the withdrawal of the campus charter.

Alcohol enemas have been the punch lines of YouTube videos, a stunt in a "Jackass" movie and a song by the punk band NOFX called "Party Enema." But Corey Slovis, chairman of department of emergency medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said actually going through with the deed can have severe consequences.

"It's something that offers no advantages, while at the same time risking someone's life," he said.

    1. Trampolines no place for kids, docs warn

Trampolines are too dangerous for children to use, the American Academy of Pediatrics warned Monday. There were nearly 100,000 trampoline injuries in 2009 -- and safety nets don't offer much protection, doctors say.

    5. If you think we're fat now, wait till 2030

The procedure bypasses the stomach, accelerating the absorption rate, Slovis said. Pouring the alcohol through a funnel can increase the amount of alcohol consumed because it's hard to gauge how much is going in.

"When you're dumping it into your rectum, often via a funnel, one or two ounces seems like such a minuscule amount," he said. Ingesting more can create unconsciousness quite quickly, he explained.

The effects have been fatal in at least one case. An autopsy performed after the death of a 58-year-old Texas man in 2004 showed he had been given an enema with enough sherry to have a blood alcohol level of 0.47 percent. Negligent homicide charges were later dropped against his wife, who said she gave him the enema.

Students walking across campus this week generally responded with sighs and eye rolls when asked about the allegations.

"It's like a big joke," said Erica Davis, a freshman from Hendersonville. "Because who does that?"

Gordon Ray, a senior from Morristown, said the details of the case caught him off guard, but not the fact that fraternity members would be overdoing it with alcohol.

"It is definitely over the top," said Ray. "But it doesn't surprise me, I don't guess."

The harm the news has done to the university's national reputation was on the mind of several students.

"If someone wants to be stupid, then they should do it where it won't affect anyone else," said Marlon Alessandra, freshman from Independence, Va.

James E. Lange, who coordinates alcohol and drug abuse prevention strategies at San Diego State University, said alcohol enemas aren't a common occurrence on campuses, though normal consumption still contributes to hundreds of student deaths annually. And many of those can be attributed to reckless attitudes about the consequences of heavy drinking, he said.

"It's not unusual to hear that students are drinking to get drunk," he said.

Lange said he hopes students don't draw the wrong lessons from the University of Tennessee incident.

"Students and people in general are pretty good at denying that they are at risk for whatever happened to someone else," he said. "So they can look at something like this and say 'I'm OK because I would never do that.'

"However, they may be drinking heavily, or doing things like mixing alcohol with prescription meds that is putting them at serious risk," he said.

To Tennessee freshman Cody Privett of Sevierville, there's nothing appealing about the incident on his campus.

"It's stupid, it's an unfortunate situation," said Privett, of Sevierville. "I mean there's partying, and then there's other things."

Thousands pray for US at 'America for Jesus' rally

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Thousands of conservative Christians gathered Saturday on Independence Mall in Philadelphia to pray for the future of the United States in the weeks before the presidential election.

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson and Family Research Council president Tony Perkins topped a full day of speakers at "The America for Jesus 2012" prayer rally.

Robertson, a former Republican candidate for president, called the election important, but didn't mention either major political party or candidate by name.

"I don't care what the ACLU says or any atheists say. This nation belongs to Jesus, and we're here today to reclaim his sovereignty," said Robertson, 82, who founded the Christian Coalition and Christian Broadcasting Network, and ran for president in 1988.

Organizers plan another prayer rally Oct. 20 in Washington, D.C., two weeks before President Barack Obama faces Republican Mitt Romney in the presidential election.

Perkins asked the crowd to pray for elected officials including Obama.

"We pray that his eyes will be open to the truth," Perkins said.

A number of event organizers, though, have been vocal critics of the Democratic president.

Steve Strang, the influential Pentecostal publisher of Charisma magazine, which was distributed at the rally, recently wrote in a blog post that America is under threat from a "radical homosexual agenda." He also said Obama "seems to be moving toward some form of European socialism."

And speaker Cindy Jacobs has blamed a mysterious Arkansas bird-kill last year on Obama's repeal of the policy known as "don't ask, don't tell," which allows gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

Speakers throughout the day condemned abortion, gay marriage and population control as practiced by Planned Parenthood. Christian rock music filled the historic mall as speakers challenged the crowd to overcome the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and slothfulness.

The rally was held outside of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Pennsylvania is also where evangelist George Whitefield preached during the first Great Awakening, the 18th-century religious revival that spread through the American colonies.

Canada's conservative government took almost a year to approve the transfer. (AP Photo/U.S. Department of Defense via The Canadian Press, File)

(AP) ? The last Western detainee held at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay returned to Canada Saturday after a decade in custody following his capture in Afghanistan at age 15 after being wounded in a firefight with U.S. soldiers, officials said.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said that 26-year-old Omar Khadr arrived at a Canadian military base on a U.S. government plane early Saturday and was transferred to the Millhaven maximum security prison in Bath, Ontario.

The son of an alleged al-Qaida financier, Khadr pleaded guilty in 2010 to killing a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan and was eligible to return to Canada from Guantanamo Bay last October under terms of a plea deal.

But Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government had long refused to request the return of Khadr, the youngest detainee held at Guantanamo. The reluctance was partly due to suspicions about the Khadr family, which has been called "the first family of terrorism."

The U.S. Defense Department confirmed the transfer in a statement and said 166 detainees remain in detention at Guantanamo Bay.

The Toronto-born Khadr was 15 when he was captured in 2002 in Afghanistan, and has spent a decade at the Guantanamo prison set up on the U.S. naval base in Cuba to hold suspected terrorists after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. He received an eight-year sentence in 2010 after being convicted of throwing a grenade that killed Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Speer during a 2002 firefight.

"His head is spinning a bit and it's going to be a real adjustment for him, but at the same time he is so happy to be home," John Norris, Khadr's Canadian lawyer, said after speaking with his client.

"He can't believe that it is finally true. He simply can't. For very good reason he was quite fearful that the government would not follow through on its word and he's pinching himself right now not believing that this government has finally kept its word," he said.

Norris said Khadr would be eligible for parole as early as the summer of 2013. He said Khadr's return to Canada comes 10 years too late.

Toews said the U.S. government initiated Khadr's transfer and suggested that Canada had little choice but to accept him because he is a Canadian citizen. It will be up to Canada's national parole board to release him, Toews said.

"Omar Khadr is a known supporter of the al-Qaida terrorist network and a convicted terrorist," Toews said.

Toews called for "robust conditions of supervision" if Khadr is granted parole. Toews said in his written decision that he reviewed all the files forwarded by the U.S. government and said the parole board should consider his concerns that Omar "idealizes" his father and "appears to deny "Ahmed Khadr's lengthy history of terrorist action and association with al-Qaida."

Toews also said that Omar Khadr's mother and sister "have openly applauded" his father's "crimes and terrorist activities" and noted that Omar has had "little contact with Canadian society and will require substantial management in order to ensure safe integration in Canada."

"I am satisfied the Correctional Service of Canada can administer Omar Khadr's sentence in a manner which recognizes the serious nature of the crimes that he has committed and ensure the safety of Canadians is protected during incarceration," Toews said.

Norris said it is regrettable that the minister is trying to influence the parole board.

"Most of what he has said there is simply not true. It's part of the stereotype of Omar that this government has been disseminating from the beginning," Norris said.

He added that once the Correctional Service "will get to know Omar" they will "recommend appropriate conditions."

Defense attorneys have said Khadr was pushed into fighting the Americans in Afghanistan by his father, Ahmed Said Khadr, an alleged al-Qaida financier whose family stayed with Osama bin Laden briefly when Omar Khadr was a boy.

The Egyptian-born father was killed in 2003 when a Pakistani military helicopter shelled the house where he was staying with senior al-Qaida operatives. Omar's youngest brother lives in Toronto and is paralyzed after being shot in the attack that killed his father.

Another brother was released from a Canadian jail last year after successfully fighting extradition to the U.S. on charges he supplied al-Qaida with weapons in Pakistan.

The father was arrested in Pakistan in 1995 after a bomb attack targeting the Egyptian embassy in Islamabad, but was released after former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien appealed to Pakistan to give him due process. Canada was embarrassed when he later emerged as a senior al-Qaida figure. Canadian governments have since refused to speak out on behalf of the Khadr family.

Omar was found in the rubble of a bombed-out compound badly wounded and near death in Afghanistan in 2002. His case received international attention after some dubbed him a child soldier.

Khadr's family did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment about his release. Norris said he told the family Saturday morning that Omar had returned to Canada.

Norris said it's not for him to say whether Omar should live with his family once he's released.

"You can't change the fact that they are his family," Norris said. "They love him and I know that they'll find a way."

Norris said Khadr has received some education in Guantanamo Bay and hopes that will continue so that he's able to reintegrate into the community.

Khadr has claimed in the past that he was abused at Guantanamo, but Canadian Foreign Affairs officials said they accept U.S. assurances that Khadr was treated humanely. Human rights groups have long criticized Harper's Conservative government for not doing enough for Khadr, and the Supreme Court of Canada twice ruled that the Canadian government had violated his rights.

Canada's three opposition parties demanded that Harper's government bring Khadr home. He has received some sympathy from Canadians, largely due to his age and the torture allegations, but his family has been widely criticized.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta signed off on Khadr's transfer in April. Panetta said in Ottawa earlier this year that sending Khadr back to Canada would be an important step because it would serve as an example to other detainees who are looking to return to their home countries or other places. Some Guantanamo detainees have been reluctant to agree to plea deals after noting that Khadr had remained in Guantanamo despite being eligible to leave since last October.

Suzanne Nossel, Amnesty International USA Executive Director, said the Guantanamo prison should finally be closed. She said Canada now has a chance to right what she called the many wrongs against Khadr and called for an investigation into Khadr's allegations of torture.

"Given the Obama administration's glacial pace towards closing the U.S.-controlled detention center, little and late though it is, today's news represents progress," Nossell said in a statement. "Khadr was imprisoned at the age of 15, subjected to ill-treatment and then prosecuted in a military commissions system that does not meet international fair trial standards. Growing up in Guantanamo and facing more prison time in Canada, his future remains uncertain."

The New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights released a statement calling Khadr's case "one of the ugliest chapters in the decade-long history of Guantanamo."

"Khadr never should have been brought to Guantanamo. He was a child of fifteen at the time he was captured, and his subsequent detention and prosecution for purported war crimes was unlawful, as was his torture by U.S. officials," CCR Legal Director Baher Azmy said.

(AP) ? No. 9 West Virginia and the Big 12, perfect together.

Geno Smith and the fast-moving, high-scoring Mountaineers proved they fit right in with their new conference, outracing No. 25 Baylor 70-63 on Saturday in the Big 12's highest-scoring game ever.

Smith tied a conference mark with eight touchdown passes and narrowly missed another one with 656 yards passing.

"It did feel like one of those classic Texas shootouts," said Smith, whose school moved over from the Big East this season. "That's kind of what the Big 12 is about."

Smith outdueled Baylor's Nick Florence, who broke Heisman Trophy-winning predecessor Robert Griffin III's school record with 581 yards. Florence threw for five TDs.

School, conference and FBS marks all got rewritten in this one.

The game also set a new record for the most points scored in a game involving a team ranked in The Associated Press poll. The previous mark of 124 was set in No. 12 Oklahoma's 82-42 win over Colorado in 1980.

How wild was it? Smith, the early Heisman front-runner, had more TD passes than incompletions (six). He finished 45 of 51 and still doesn't have an interception this season.

"Can you please tell me how you can improve on that?" West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said.

Maybe not on offense, but both defenses have plenty of work to do.

West Virginia amassed a school-record 807 yards and the teams combined for 1,507 yards of offense and 67 first downs. Six receivers had at least 100 yards receiving.

The Bears' Terrance Williams set a Big 12 record with 314 yards receiving. The old mark was set minutes earlier by West Virginia's Stedman Bailey, who had 303 yards and a school-record five TDs.

Williams' 8-yard scoring catch brought Baylor (3-1) within 70-63 with 3:08 left.

But Dustin Garrison ran for 17 yards on third down and the Mountaineers ran out the clock to snap Baylor's nine-game winning streak, the second-longest in the nation.

"We expect to score that many points a game," Florence said. "But the goal is to score more than our opponent and we came up a little short today."

The combined 19 touchdowns tied an FBS mark, last reached when Navy beat North Texas 74-62 in 2007. That matchup set the FBS record for most points in a regulation game at 136.

Baylor, meanwhile, tied an FBS mark for the most points scored by a losing team.

Among the other records, Smith set school single-game marks for completions, yards and touchdown passes.

Bailey and Tavon Austin became the first FBS teammates with 200 yards receiving since 2007.

Going back to the Orange Bowl, West Virginia has scored 10 touchdowns three times in its last five games.

"Statistically, it's my best game ever," Smith said. "But I think it's more about the team, and I think it just lets us know that we're going to have to battle it out every week against some really tough teams in the Big 12.

"I could care less about a Heisman Trophy. The big thing for us what that we won the game today. We're on a mission, and we want to win them all."

West Virginia went ahead for good early in the third quarter, but Baylor almost always had an answer.

Austin made long touchdown grabs three minutes apart while Baylor punted and missed a long field goal. Smith stayed in a groove, throwing three passes of 45 yards or more in the third quarter alone. His 47-yarder to Bailey set up Andrew Buie's second short TD run for a 56-35 lead.

The way this game was going, though, no cushion was safe.

Williams caught a 37-yard scoring pass from Florence and, after Baylor's defense forced a rare punt, Florence's sneak brought the Bears within 56-49, and there was still 14:14 left.

But Bailey scored on TD grabs of 87 and 39 yards after that.

"We fought hard," said Baylor coach Art Briles. "But we didn't respond well enough to win the game."

Holgorsen talked at length about how impatient he got watching Maryland's offense run the clock down before each snap last week.

There was no chance of a slowdown from Baylor.

The teams scored on 10 of their final 13 possessions of the first half. Seven of those drives lasted under two minutes.

Smith, whose passing yardage total was 5 yards shy of the Big 12 mark, completed a school-record 14 straight passes at one point. After a dropped pass, Smith completed 12 more in a row.

Smith's fourth TD pass came with 29 seconds left until halftime, but that was more than enough time for Florence. On second down he threw down the left sideline to Lanear Sampson, who juked two defenders and went 67 yards untouched to tie the score at 35-35.

The Mountaineers now must hope they can generate points on the road when they head to No. 12 Texas and Texas Tech over the next two weeks.

"Not every Big 12 game is like this," Holgorsen said.

How Critical Thought Increases Innovation and Improves ...

Running a business requires more than sound formulas. While there are plenty of time-tested methods for getting things started, it takes an extra something to create a business that not only survives but thrives in various economic conditions. There isn?t a clear-cut answer for every question, and not every problem has an ideal solution. While it?s acceptable to borrow someone else?s playbook for most things, business owners who lack originality and problem-solving skills will get left in the dust by those who can think creatively.

Flexibility and Leadership in the New Millennium

The technological landscape has changed on a wider scale within the last decade than it did during the three decades that preceded it. This has rendered a lot of old business strategies obsolete, and the rate of progress has shown no signs of slowing down. It?s the primary reason that business owners need to become more creative; viable long-term strategies need to incorporate a degree of flexibility that business plans didn?t require prior to the 21st century.

It isn?t enough for business owners to hire creative thinkers to serve their companies. They need to embody what they want to see in their employees. Companies without strong leaders are like rudderless ships in stormy seas; employees may have brilliant ideas, but without someone in charge who recognizes true innovation, those ideas become little more than wasted potential. Business owners don?t need to become experts at everything, but they do need to know enough to be able to hire the right people, and they need to be beacons of confidence to those who have entrusted them with their futures.

Applied Understanding

There?s always more than one way to approach a problem, and learning all of the various methods is necessary for truly understanding what?s at the core of it. That understanding can often be applied to other aspects of a business, and it gives employees the kind of experience that?s immensely helpful when dealing with new challenges.

This is where critical thinking comes into play. When it?s broken down, critical thought requires two things: a willingness to question assumptions and the ability to create actionable plans. It?s not entirely unlike the scientific method, and the main benefit is that it?s results-oriented over everything else. It forces people to keep digging until they uncover solutions, and as long as there are well-defined goals, a little critical thought can go a long way.

Creativity and the Bottom Line

A lot of business owners make the mistake of undervaluing creative thinking, but creativity is the wild card that can push a business over the top. Creative marketing campaigns are responsible for sustaining the profitable empires of countless corporate entities, and encouraging creativity among employees can lend itself to bursts of inspiration that end up becoming incredibly?profitable. Creative work environments also foster?job satisfaction

among employees, and that helps business owners create an army of loyal workers who want to see their company succeed. That?s a key component of long-term financial success.

The Expectations of the Modern Age

It?s not easy to run a business, and encouraging creativity and critical thought may seem like a huge burden for some, but the potential payoff is far too great to ignore. Businesses can no longer survive if they are devoid of creativity, and fostering the kind of work environment that engages both creative and critical impulses is necessary for survival in the modern world.

Home Based Business Tips Help You To Survive And Thrive | The ...

Life is notorious for delivering sucker punches that can really knock the wind out of you. You may find that you have lost a good job after many years, and you don?t know what to do next. Have you ever thought about starting a work from home business? Read on to get some ideas on what to do to get started.

As the owner and operator of your own home business, you should always save your receipts from business-related purchases. The fact that you run your own business makes any related expenditure, such as transportation, supplies and equipment, tax deductible. Save all receipts associated with these expenses, as a lot of them will end up being deductible. You may end up paying more taxes than you owe.

TIP! A good tip that you can do for your home based business is to read up on SEO tips that you can use to improve your status online. High rankings are the key to attracting potential customers to your website.

When you no longer have inventory of a given item, be sure to inform potential buyers. Customers do not like to wait, and you will seriously upset them if the items they ordered won?t be arriving for several days. Avoid selling products that are out of stock; if they are, inform your customers so that they are not left waiting while you restock.

Business travel has many valuable benefits. Business trips, unlike vacations, are at least partially deductible from your taxes. Find a place which has a conference or seminar related to your business and take a vacation to that place. In this way, your deductions will be legal and defensible to the IRS.

TIP! Look for forums where other people with home businesses discuss their trade. There are many forums for work-at-home business owners, each with their own personality and support to offer.

Every online business owner should have a presence on the internet. Create a customer friendly website, or hire someone to do it for you. Include information on your site that will benefit your customers and provide a means for them to contact you when needed. Do research and talk to design companies to gain knowledge on the best ways to create a great website.

Be sure to stay in touch with the customers of your home business, but don?t overburden them with communication. Offer email alerts or newsletters, especially if you have frequent discounts or your website is updated often. Do not go overboard with communicating too often.

TIP! Opening a business checking account makes keeping records of what your business is doing much easier. To be effective, you must ensure that you use the account for all of your business expenses.

Design your business?s website to sell products. Many home business owners choose to conduct all sales in person; an online storefront can give you a competitive edge. It is possible to sign up for one at a low cost on various websites.

Make a business plan for your home business. No matter the size of your business, it is important to have a business plan in place. If you have a set plan, you will be able to continue to build your business effectively.

TIP! Gaining your family and friends? support is very important when starting your home-based business. Running a home business is very time consuming, and can be both difficult and stressful.

While conducting business in your sleepwear can seem enjoyable at first, you may begin to miss the interaction that you had with coworkers and clients everyday at your previous job. Make sure to get out, go to other locations, and involve yourself with others to maintain your personal interactions.

Search engine optimization is a vital tool to increase the Internet visibility of your home business. Search engine optimization, or SEO, is an effective strategy for increasing a home business?s web presence and potential online customer base. Look into guides for optimizing your own website, or look into hiring a professional to do it for you.

TIP! Make sure you take all deductions that you should, including the cost of entertaining clients, in order to save what money you can on your taxes. In these cases, these meetings are actual business expenses.

You need to be patient. Keep your expectations reasonable because home based businesses don?t become profitable overnight. You will need to devote a lot of time and energy into a small business. When you put energy into the business, you have a higher chance for being successful. One of the most important traits you can have while running your business is patience.

Be aware of the prices the competition sets and keep a lookout for any price changes. In this way, you can maintain a competitive edge, as well as keeping a close eye on your own sales figures.

TIP! To set a reasonable price for anything you want to sell, start by getting a good feel for its current market value. Look at your competition, and aim to offer more competitive prices.

You could use your talents and interests to start a business that offers your services, from dog walking or chauffeuring, to preparing meals or delivering groceries. These service industries are a great way to start your own business and with so many people needing help, they are sure to be a success.

To make sure your business remains financially secure, establish an emergency fund. You will be able to afford expenses that are surprises and your business will run properly. Do not use the money in your emergency fund if unnecessary. If you do use the money, be sure to replenish it as fast as you can.

TIP! Research anyone you plan to hire for your home business. You need to make sure they are skilled and reliable with what they sell on your behalf, since you can risk taking a major hit to your business.

If you desire to make lots of cash as a home based business owner, it?s vital that you know when to take chances. Experimenting with new things is something that you can do to attract people to your company, which can lead to high amounts of profit. Doing the same routine can prevent you from not knowing if you can do something better.

While jogging your brain for ideas about your home business products, be sure to to find something that meets certain needs you have. Customers are sure to be interested in purchasing something with the ability to help with an issue they regularly confront. If you come up with a viable solution to a problem that you deal with, your product will most likely be successful.

TIP! Make sure you keep a mileage log for each vehicle that is used for your business. As an entrepreneur, if you have any automobile expenses, they will be eligible for a deduction on your business taxes.

Watch, and make note of, your business costs to save money. This includes things like business related car mileage and Internet service. When you run a business, a lot of your expenses are tax deductible. Be sure to keep track of all expenses, no matter how small, because they add up quickly.

Use multiple contact methods including snail mail, telephone and email. Keep a record of the people who contacted you, and find out which of them purchased your products after the inquiries. There is the possibility that their purchase was a result of your answers, and you can learn to reproduce the same results with each curious visitor.

TIP! Compare your new home business to similar businesses in the area to determine what kind of price points you need to set up to stay competitive. Set your own rates with the information that you learn in your research.

Any expense incurred by you for business purposes, such as lunch with a client, may qualify as a legitimate tax deduction. Getting together with clients can be considered a business expense. Just be careful to limit these deductions to expenses incurred while entertaining clients or prospects, or else the entertainment expenses are not justifiably tax deductible.

Pick a brand or product name that has meaning. Your brand name is the first and last thing that people will remember. The name you choose could have a memorable or interesting connotation. This will help build your customer loyalty and give your brand a direction.

TIP! One cost-effective way to buy online advertising is by paying in kind: offer to host another webmaster?s ads in exchange for getting your own hosted on there site. Sharing advertising space can increase traffic to all of the participating sites and increase their search engine rankings.

To save your business documents, use cheap storage. This could severely affect tax time, and it could actually cause you to lose business and cost you much money. Another backup option is to use online backup solutions like Mozy.

Your website needs a banner page. You will then be able to trade banner ads with other sites. This is a great and easy way to improve your rankings in the search engines and will garner you more traffic.

TIP! Be sure to have a forward thinking attitude. Try to remember that your past successes are in the past.

It is important to keep track of your daily spending since these have a direct effect on the business you operate. Make sure you stay on top of record keeping so you can get the most out of your tax deductions and also to help if you are audited.

TIP! Have a separate bank account to use for your business. This helps you separate your business dealings with your personal account.

You should get familiar with how to optimize search engine results as this will help raise your rank in the result pages of queries that pertain to your niche. A higher rank translates into higher traffic towards your website. Because there are differing opinions on search engine optimization, collect your information from multiple sources.

You could use your talents and interests to start a business that offers your services, from dog walking or chauffeuring, to preparing meals or delivering groceries. Brainstorming will generate many ideas for helping people in your town or city.

You will need a emergency fund to make sure you have financial security. You will be able to pay any surprise expenses with an emergency fund, which will assure your business continues to run smoothly. Only take money from this fund when it is absolutely necessary and make sure that you replace the money at the first available opportunity.

You should always put away some money out of everything that comes in so that you can pay your taxes after each year. Around fifteen to twenty percent of what you make in a year will have to be paid back to the government in the form of taxes. By setting aside some money, it is much easier on you instead of having to fight to gather enough money when tax time arrives.

Investors will want to know many details about how you run your business. Try to get the best results from the money you currently have available.

While reading this article, hopefully you were inspired to take your life into your own hands. You were given a lot of tips about starting a online business, and now is the time to grab the bull by the horns and go for it! Napiergrass: A potential biofuel crop for the sunny Southeast

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? A grass fed to cattle throughout much of the tropics may become a biofuel crop that helps the nation meet its future energy needs, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientist.

Napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum) is fairly drought-tolerant, grows well on marginal lands, and filters nutrients out of runoff in riparian areas, according to William Anderson, a geneticist in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Crop Genetics and Breeding Research Unit in Tifton, Ga. ARS is USDA's principal intramural scientific research agency, and this research supports the USDA priority of developing new sources of bioenergy.

Government mandates call for production of up to 36 billion gallons of biofuel by 2022. While much of that will come from grain ethanol, 21 billion gallons is expected to be derived from other crop-based feedstocks.

As part of a nationwide search for alternatives, Anderson and his colleagues compared napiergrass with several other candidate feedstocks in a study to see how they would fare in head-to-head competition. The researchers grew energy cane, napiergrass, switchgrass and giant reed for four years and compared biomass yields and soil nutrient requirements.

Joseph Knoll, a post-doctoral researcher in Anderson's laboratory, led the research effort. The team included Timothy Strickland and Robert Hubbard, ARS scientists with the agency's Southeast Regional Watershed Research Unit in Tifton, and Ravindra Malik of Albany State University in Albany, Ga.

With sunny skies and long growing seasons, farms and forests in the Southeastern United States are expected to play a major role in providing biofuel crops. The researchers' findings, along with others, show that napiergrass could be a viable biofuel crop in the Southeast's southern tier. It is not as cold-tolerant as switchgrass, but does offer advantages, such as continuing to produce biomass until the first frost. The research results have been published in BioEnergy Research.

The researchers are continuing to study napiergrass with an eye toward improving yields, usable fiber content, and disease resistance. They are also evaluating production systems that use chicken litter, synthetic fertilizer, and winter cover crops, as well as different irrigation levels, harvest times and planting dates. Preliminary findings in those studies show yields are sufficient without irrigation, and that there is little difference in yield when poultry litter is used instead of synthetic fertilizers.

SensoGlove revamp brings automatic pressure check, stops us from strangling our golf swing

Hand rookie golfers a driver and they'll frequently make the classic mistake of gripping the club as though their lives depend on it. A seasoned veteran knows that a little give and take might be needed, which is why Sensosolutions just updated its long-serving SensoGlove to better encourage a balanced hold. The new automatic sensitivity toggle will offer a recommended grip through the LCD based on how tightly the club has been held in the past; throttle the 9 iron often and you'll be asked to loosen up. Longer battery life is also in the cards versus the older model, although we're reaching out to determine how many more holes the glove will handle in one charge. No matter how you slice (or hook) it, the newer SensoGlove is shipping for $89 in versions for both hands and multiple sizes.

Calif. kids' football team hit with bounty scandal

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) ? In a pee-wee version of the NFL's bounty scandal, the head coach and league president of an Orange County children's football team have been suspended amid allegations that players were offered up to $50 in cash to knock opponents out of games.

National Pop Warner officials suspended Darren Crawford of the Tustin Pee Wee Red Cobras and Tustin President Pat Galentine until the program can investigate and rule on the allegations, according to the Orange County Register (bit.ly/OsCHwh).

The investigation is expected to take at least several weeks, Pop Warner spokesman Josh Pruce said.

The Cobras, consisting mainly of 10- and 11-year-olds, advanced to the Pop Warner Super Bowl last year and finished the season with a 12-1 record.

A group of parents alleged that during the season, Crawford and a then-assistant coach, Richard Bowman, offered youngsters cash for big hits and to knock targeted opposing players out of playoff games.

One boy left a game because of a mild concussion and another former assistant coach, John Zanelli, claims the player that hit him was rewarded with cash.

Crawford, Bowman and Galentine consistently have denied that any cash incentives were paid.

Pop Warner's Orange Empire Conference commissioner, Bobby Espinosa, said he found no evidence of a bounty program after reviewing allegations from six parents and four players. They alleged that bounties of between $20 and $50 were offered during three playoff games at the end of the 2011 season, the Register reported.

Galentine sent Tustin Pop Warner board members an email Thursday about the suspensions.

"The singular focus of our board continues to be the safety and well-being of our kids and the continued success of TPW," he wrote, urging support for young players who "have been placed in the crossfire of this issue by no choice of their own."

Former Tustin Pop Warner President Mark Gutierrez was named acting president during Galentine's absence.

The NFL suspended four players after concluding they were involved in a pay-for-injury bounty pool that ran for three seasons from 2009-2011 and offered cash rewards for knocking opposing players out of games.

The players were reinstated after they successfully appealed the suspensions. New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton was suspended for the season.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A new research study led by an Indiana University professor has found that social bullying is just as prevalent in children's television as depictions of physical aggression.

The study, "Mean on the Screen: Social Aggression in Programs Popular With Children," which appears in the Journal of Communication, found that 92 percent of the top 50 program for children between the ages of two and 11 showed characters involved in social aggression.

On average, there were 14 different incidents of social aggression per hour - or once every four minutes.

While physical aggression in television for children has been extensively documented, this is believed to be among the first studies to analyze children's exposure to behaviors such as cruel gossiping and manipulation of friendship.

"Social aggression was more likely to be enacted by an attractive perpetrator, to be featured in a humorous context and neither rewarded or punished," wrote Nicole Martins, assistant professor of telecommunications in the IU College of Arts and Sciences. "In these ways, social aggression on television poses more of a risk for imitation and learning than do portrayals of physical aggression."

Martins, the lead researcher on the study, and Barbara Wilson, professor of communication at the University of Illinois, conducted a content analysis of the 50 most popular children's shows according to Nielsen Media Research between December of 2006 to March of 2007. In all, 150 television shows were viewed and analyzed.

Careful attention was given to what was portrayed in the cases of social aggression, whether the behavior was rewarded or punished, justified, or committed by an attractive perpetrator.

The findings suggest that some of the ways in which social aggression is contextualized make these depictions particularly problematic for young viewers.

"These findings should help parents and educators recognize that there are socially aggressive behaviors on programs children watch," Martins said. "Parents should not assume that a program is okay for their child to watch simply because it does not contain physical violence.

"Parents should be more aware of portrayals that may not be explicitly violent in a physical sense but are nonetheless anti-social in nature," Martins added.

The vast majority of socially aggressive incidents - 78 percent - was verbal; words to hurt the self-esteem or social standing of another character on the program. The most common types of social aggression were insults (52 percent) or name-calling (25 percent). Other common types of negative behavior shown were teasing (10 percent) and sarcasm (9 percent).

Only about 20 percent of all socially aggressive incidents were non-verbal in nature and typically employed a mean face (36 percent) or laughter meant to lower the self-esteem of another character (31 percent). Rolling eyes, finger pointing and simply ignoring the other person also were common.

"We also coded whether social aggression was directly perpetrated at the target - such as making a mean face - or indirectly perpetrated behind the target's back - such as spreading a rumor," the authors wrote. "The vast majority of socially aggressive incidents (86 percent) were enacted directly at the target. Rarely were socially aggressive incidents perpetrated behind the target's back."

While previous research has demonstrated that gossip is one of the most common forms of social aggression in real life, it was rarely seen in children's television shows analyzed for the study. Martins and Wilson concluded that gossip, due to its indirect nature, may have been seen by program producers as being too subtle for advancing a story's plot.
